What is Doodling?

The original definition of “to doodle” is “to draw, sketch or scribble idly” especially while you are doing something else. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be abstract shapes.

When you doodle while you are doing something else like talking on the phone, sitting at school, or in a meeting, you may start to scribble different shapes, patterns, and drawings on the paper before you.

These hand-drawn shapes are usually a result of frustration, boredom, and tension. During a meeting, some people get bored because they hate doing nothing, and to relieve their boredom they start to doodle.

It can seem rather rude to start doodling during a meeting, but doodling while listening to someone feeding you information, can actually help you remember the information better.

Doodling requires no thinking, but it helps your brain working. Since doodling is a mindless and easy activity, it gives your brain time to work and think.

Don’t think you can draw? That you’re not even creative?

It doesn’t matter! Everyone can doodle, so you don’t need to be an artist to do it. Doodling is instinctive and comes naturally and there are many benefits of doodling that may convince you to give doodling a go!

The Benefits of Doodling

Coloring for adults has become very popular during the last couple of years. And it’s easy to see why since doodling is a very affordable creative activity that doesn’t require a lot of supplies and has a ton of benefits. Here are some of the benefits of doodling:

Doodling improves your memory

In a study, a group of people monitored a monotonous mock telephone message for the names of people coming to a party. Half of the group was randomly assigned to a ‘doodling’ condition where they shaded printed shapes while listening to the telephone call.

Doodling helps you relax

Spontaneous drawings may also relieve psychological distress, making it easier to attend to things. We like to make sense of our lives by making up coherent stories, but sometimes some gaps cannot be filled, no matter how hard we try.

Doodling relieves stress

Spontaneous drawing,” as researchers call it, has been studied to examine its effects on psychological distress. Even studies on cancer patients have found that some form of art has helped decrease stress.

There are numerous reasons why, but the most common theory is that the repetition and rhythmic motions of sketching can activate the relaxation response as a way to counter the body’s fight-or-flight intuition.

And making art has been shown in studies to reduce cortisol, the “stress hormone. (source)

Aside from the psychological benefits of doodling, performing something as simple as putting a pen to a piece of paper to create doodle art, can also help unlock your creativity.

If you’re struggling from a creative block, all you need to do is start doodling and there’s no way of knowing where you’ll end up.

What You Need to Get Started

Doodling doesn’t require a lot of supplies. All you really need is just a piece of paper and a pencil. If you want to create doodle art, on the other hand, you can add some more supplies.

Graphite Pencils

A pencil is great for creating the first sketch of your doodle which comes into your mind. I would recommend a soft pencil with a low HB grade so you can erase it easily if you want to make changes to your doodle.

Ink Pen Set

A drawing pen is used for drawing the outlines of your doodle sketch. You can use different thickness of the writing tip to your taste for refining and shading your doodle.

Color Pencils

If you want to add color to your doodles, then these color pencils are the absolute best.

Washable Marker Packs

If you’re not a fan of color pencils, you can use markers to add color to your doodle art.

Paper

Paper Sketch Pad

If you want to organize your work and look back at it from time to time, I would recommend a sketchbook or drawing book.

Sketch Pad for Drawing

If you like to sketch on the go, then you’ll need a portable notebook.

Eraser

You are bound to make mistakes in your doodling. And when that happens, you’ll need a good eraser to get rid of your mistakes.

Basic Doodle Shapes

With the use of some basic doodle shapes, you can create something called the visual alphabet. The visual alphabet is a set of simple shapes that we use when we are learning to draw. As letters are one of the basics for writing, these shapes are the basis for doodling.

The visual alphabet is made up of 12 basic shapes that form the bedrock of every doodle you will ever create. It was first introduced by Dave Gray who is one of the early pioneers of the modern visual thinking movement.

Just as we have a standard alphabet for writing, this visual alphabet is used for transforming your ideas and thoughts into doodling. And just as the regular alphabet can be used to write down any word or tell a story, the visual alphabet can be used in a similar way to doodle anything in your environment or imagination that can then, of course, be used to represent an idea or tell a story. Below, is a video created by Dave Gray where he introduces you to the visual alphabet and walks you through some other more advanced doodling techniques.
